Planet Fitness offers free summer gym membership to high school students

High school students will have the opportunity to exercise for free at Planet Fitness this summer, along with the chance to win a scholarship.

Planet Fitness is offering high school students, ages 14 to 19, a free summer membership pass starting May 16 at any of its more than 2,200 U.S. and Canada locations. The membership will last until Aug. 31, and students who sign up will also be entered for a chance to win a $500 scholarship, with one awarded per state. One teen will also be selected to receive a grand prize of $5,000 at the end of the summer.

Amanda Pleiter, senior marketing manager for Planet Fitness, told Fauquier Now the company hopes the membership will allow high schoolers to remain active during the summer when there aren’t school sports programs, gym classes and after-school activities happening.

“A new national study commissioned by Planet Fitness found that 93 percent of American teens want to stay healthy and active over the summer months, but many lack motivation or access to do so,” she wrote in an email exchange.

In Virginia, 58.6 percent of teens do not meet the recommended activity guidelines, and 15.8 percent of teens are overweight, according to the 2019 CDC High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

High School Summer Pass, formally known as “Teen Summer Challenge,” launched in 2019 and saw more than 900,000 teens sign-up and complete more than 5.5 million workouts over a three-and-a-half-month period.

High schoolers can visit PlanetFitness.com/SummerPass to pre-register and get a reminder to formally sign up when the program officially kicks off on May 16. Teens under 18 must register with a parent or guardian online or in-club.

Eligible students in Fauquier County can sign up at the newly opened Planet Fitness at 141 W. Lee Hwy. in Warrenton.
