Supervisors vote Thursday on Hume telecomm tower

The 145-foot tower at 5060 Leeds Manor Road would provide cell and broadband service.
The county board of supervisors Thursday probably will approve plans to construct a 145-foot telecommunications tower at Hume.

Fauquier’s planning commission on Jan. 17 unanimously recommended approval of Baltimore-based Calvert Crossland LLC’s and Verizon Wireless’s special exception permit application to construct a monopole on 14.8 acres at 5060 Leeds Manor Road.

The supervisors on Thursday will conduct a public hearing on the proposal in the Warren Green Building in Warrenton.

Also Thursday, the supervisors will begin discussing the 2020 budget and the county plan for capital projects.

Barring surprises, the board, which has final authority, probably will approve the Northern Fauquier telecommunications tower immediately after the Feb. 14 hearing.

Once operating, the tower will provide reliable cell phone and broadband internet service to the hilly, rural area, according to the applicants.

The applicants will provide such service as soon as possible, according to Calvert Crossland Partner Barb Pivec.

For many Hume area residents, a telecommunications tower has been a long time coming.

In January 2013, the five-member board of supervisors unanimously approved AT&T’s special exception permit application to construct a 155-foot tower on a site adjoining the Fuller parcel. Hume and nearby residents overwhelmingly backed the project.

For various reasons, including the death of the original site’s landowner, tower lease issues, AT&T corporate restructuring and expiration of county approvals associated with the project, the tower never got built.

The new Hume tower proposal calls for mounting up to 12 Verizon Wireless antennas and space for three other carriers.

Springfield, Mass.-based Omnipoint Technology will provide broadband service from one of the remaining three positons, according to Ms. Pivec.

Her company has played a key role in the county’s efforts to extend broadband to Fauquier’s unserved and underserved areas.

In November 2016, Calvert Crossland received special exception permit approval from the supervisors to construct a 140-foot tower near Casanova. Her company completed the structure by November 2017.

Leasing tower space, Omnipoint began serving the area by July and Verizon by last December.

In June, the supervisors granted Calvert Crossland a special exception permit to construct a 195-foot tower near Goldvein in Southern Fauquier. That tower should be completed in early February, according to Ms. Pivec.

She hopes Verizon and Omnipoint will be serving the Goldvein area by spring.

Blaze Broadband currently provides high speed Broadband and phone service in and around Hume from the top of Rattlesnake Mountain, a natural "tower" 1,200 feet higher than this proposed steel tower. Once on Blaze you get excellent Internet and can use WiFi calling to get 5 bars of cell service throughout your house.
