Carla Elizabeth Di Giulian, 81, of Gainesville, passed away on January 7, 2021 after a long illness.
She resided in Oakton, Hume and Warrenton for many years.
Carla was born June 15, 1939, to Attilio and Inez Di Giulian. She was very proud of her Italian heritage.
Carla attended Saint James Catholic School in Falls Church. She continued her Catholic high school education at Marymount Secondary School in Arlington. Carla earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics at the University of Maryland in 1962.
Carla dedicated her early professional life to showing and breeding horses, including thoroughbred racehorses at her successful business, Rockhaven Stud.
An accomplished artist, Carla skillfully practiced watercolor and oil painting, tole painting, crocheting, needlepoint, knitting and quilting. Carla was an expert knitter, and she made it her heartfelt annual mission to knit 40 colorful hats for the Women of St. John’s to give to needy children.
A strong love of animals was evident throughout Carla’s life, as she rescued and nurtured several dogs. She had a gift for bringing out her dogs’ unique personalities and making them an endearing part of her family. Carla passed on her love of animals to her nieces and nephews.
A devout Catholic, Carla loved attending the Saturday Vigil Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. She enjoyed visiting with family there. She was especially pleased to see her great-nephews as altar servers. Often, she would join her extended family for a gathering afterwards. Two of her final family celebrations were the wedding of her great-nephew, Zack, and the baptism of her great-nephew, Sammy.
Carla dearly loved her nieces and nephews. She delighted in having them join her for weekends and summers at the family farm in Hume. Later in her life, she celebrated many birthdays and special occasions at their homes. She loved conversation and a good game of cards. Her trips to the beach with family were also a highlight for her.
Carla was predeceased by her parents; her sister-in-law, Joan Di Giulian; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Holly Di Giulian; her nephew, Jimmy Di Giulian, and her beloved Aunt Sissy.
