David Gilliam Moates Jr., 76 of Broad Run, passed away peacefully at his home on July 16, 2020.
A Richmond native, David graduated Benedictine High School and Virginia Commonwealth University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964 and earned a medal as the top ranking marksman during his service. He later worked for the state at the Virginia Water and Soil Commission and the Virginia Employment Commission until his retirement.
After he retired, he worked as an Administrator for the Benedictine Monastery in Bristow.
David, who studied landscaping under Gillette in Richmond, always had a passion for gardening, inspiring others and telling stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Audrey Moates, and five brothers, Vincent, John, Lawrence, James and Joseph.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris; two daughters, Caroline Marcus and husband Frederick of Richmond and Christine Jones and husband Sheldon of Herndon; his sister, Theresa Wicker of Richmond, and six grandchildren, Alexander, Rebecca, Levi, Quinn, Bladen and Rowan.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. A private burial will take place on Monday, August 3, at Little Georgetown Cemetery near Broad Run.
