Obituaries » Elizabeth “Betsy” Bailey

Elizabeth “Betsy” McKenzie Bailey, 83, of Jeffersonton, passed away peacefully June 2, 2021, at her home, with her family by her side.

She was born June 8, 1937, in Evanston, Ill., to the late Garfield A. McKenzie and Elizabeth Francis McKenzie.

Betsy graduated Penn State University with a degree in Recreation Education. She worked in her chosen field in New York and New Jersey, until moving to California. She was a Recreation Supervisor for the cities of Arcadia and El Monte in California. She served a term as President of the Glendale AAUW. After moving back to the east, she began work with the city of Falls Church, where she established The Falls Church Senior Center, as the Director. She was certified as a Professional Recreator. Betsy was very involved in The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics for over 33 years, where she served as a dedicated representative and a board member until her passing. Betsy’s memberships included: The National Recreation and Parks Association, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Montrose, Pa., and the Montrose Club in Montrose, Pa.

Betsy is survived by her husband, James P. Bailey Jr.; their daughter, Beth Bailey Slack and her husband Kevin of Summerville, S.C.; their son, James McKenzie Bailey and his wife Leslie of Gainesville; their grandchildren, Whitney Slack Porter and her husband Will, Erin B. Slack, James P. Bailey II and Lauren K. Bailey; and her sister, Anne M. Rogers of Jeffersonville, Vt.

In addition to her parents, Betsy was preceded in death by her grandson, James Robert Bailey.

Services will be held in Montrose, PA at the family’s convenience.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (a 501 C 3) and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Montrose, Pa.

Betsy will be missed deeply by the many lives she touched, but will forever be in our hearts and memories.
