Jay Ellis Van Gelder, 62, died July 31, 2019, at his home in Midland.
Known as “Dad,” “Uncle,” “Pap-Pap” and “First Sergeant, Jay was born on August 9, 1956, in Pittsburgh. A 1974 Brentwood High School graduate, Jay moved to Northern Virginia to pursue a career in law enforcement, joining the Prince William County Police Department in 1978.
Jay married his wife, Jeanette, in 1981 and raised two boys. Jay retired from the police force in 2006, continuing his interests with helping the Mt. Horeb and Ruritan communities, mentoring children, gardening, reading, traveling and lending a hand to those in need. He also previously served on the Fauquier County School Board.
Jay is survived by his wife, Jeanette; their two sons, Geoffrey and Jarred, and their wives, Kristen and Sarah; Geoffrey’s children, Mason and Emily; his sister-in-law, Patti and husband John and their children; his brother, Gary and wife Mary and their children; his sister, Janet and husband Jim and their son, and many relatives and friends.
His visitation service will be held Monday, August 5, at 10 a.m., followed by the 11:30 a.m. memorial service at Moser’s Funeral Home in Warrenton.
