Merritt M. Railey III, 76, of Warrenton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at Alexandra Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and three surviving children.
He was born on May 4, 1944, in Bethesda, Md., to the late Merritt M. Railey Jr. and Velma McVey.
He was the oldest son of seven children and graduated from Falls Church High School. Mr. Railey worked for Protocircuits in Maryland for more 30 years and later as a Fairfax County bus driver. Merritt loved coaching his children in various sports, racing and restoring cars, bass fishing, cooking and working with his hands.
He will be remembered most for his vibrant laugh, excellent cooking and unwavering love for his family.
Merritt is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, JoAnn; his sons, Merritt M. Railey IV (Sherri), Eric M. Railey and Steven R. Railey (Natasha), and was predeceased by his daughter Karen M. Kirkpatrick. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Edna McCormick; his nine grandchildren, S. Michael Railey, Merritt M. Railey V, Joseph M. Railey, Patrick T. Railey, Amanda J. Kirkpatrick, Greyson W. Railey, J. Austin Kirkpatrick, Logan M. Railey and Ryan D. Kirkpatrick; his siblings, Joanne Elliot, William “Billy” Railey (Rhonda), Kenny Railey (Frances), Elizabeth Dehart and Rachel Hewlett, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton on Wednesday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. (You must wear a mask to attend due to Covid-19.)
