Obituaries » Richard Emmett McCauley

Richard Emmett McCauley, 80, of Charlottesville and formerly of Fauquier, died October 21, 2020, in Charlottesville after a brutal battle with dementia.

Born February 4, 1940, in Charlottesville, Richard was the eldest son of Columbus Derrett McCauley and Dorothy Ludden McCauley of Glenview, Ill.

After graduating from St. George High School, Evanston, Ill., he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. In 1960, he married Mary Louise Shomo McCauley, of Glenview Ill., and went on to raise six children. After graduating from Loyola University, he had a 33-year career in sales and marketing in the packaging industry. His post retirement years were spent working with horses in Virginia, Montana and Wyoming. Mr. McCauley volunteered at the Fort Washakie School in Fort Washakie, Wyo., where he helped Native American students read, write and hopefully have a better opportunity in life.

Richard was an avid outdoorsman who loved his family, friends and most of all his dogs. He had a sarcastic sense of humor, a great laugh, enjoyed good food, a stiff scotch, classical and country music, red diesel trucks, aviators, baseball hats, farms and wide open spaces.

He is survived by his six siblings, Michael McCauley, of Waukesha, Wis., Kathleen McCauley McGinley of Villanova, Pa., James McCauley of Algonquin, Ill., Mollie McCauley of LaPlata, Md., Dianne McCauley Dawson of Richmond and Deborah McCauley of West Haven, Conn.; his four children, Laura McCauley of Jeffersonton, Shaun McCauley of Westchester, Pa., Shayne McCauley of Lincoln University, Pa., and Lissa McCauley of Middleburg; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Richard was predeceased by his parents and sister, Patricia Ann McCauley Meier.

A private family memorial service will take place Saturday, November 21, in Richmond. His burial will be in Lander, Wyo., in the spring of 2021.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lab Rescue, P. O. Box 1814, Annandale, Va. 22003.
