Obituaries » James Ronald “Ronnie” Poe

James Ronald “Ronnie” Poe, 79, departed this life on Thursday, January 12, 2012, at his home near Amissville.

He was born on September 20, 1932, in Rappahannock County, to the late John James and Mayo Riley Poe.

Mr. Poe grew up in Rappahannock, where he attended public school and later married his wife of 59 years, Mary Lee Kilby Poe.

He worked many years for the Goodyear tire dealer and Arrington Motor Sales in Warrenton until he opened Old Towne Auto Services in Warrenton, which he has operated for 32 years.

Mr. Poe was an avid lover of Bluegrass music and enjoyed playing five-string banjo with the Virginia Travelers, The Freestate Ramblers and later the Shenandoah Travelers. He was a member of the Amissville United Methodist Church and attended Woodville Baptist Church faithfully. When he wasn’t working or playing music, he also enjoyed woodworking. Most of all, he loved people, especially joking and kidding or any other conversation that time would allow.

Survivors include four children, Deborah Poe, James Gregory Poe and his wife Cindy, the Rev. Ronald Lee Poe and his wife Laflecia, and Teresa Myers and her husband David; seven grandchildren, Brian Flock and his wife Ashley, Stephen Poe, Amy Berry, Lindsey Poe, Alisha Summers and her husband Toussaint, Irving Smith, Joslyn Smith, and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Raymond Poe, Rena Corbin, Irva Poe and Violet Welch, and a grandchild, James Gregory Poe Jr.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Amissville Baptist Church, where the funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 17. Interment will follow at the Amissville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Richard Ashby, Kevin Roop, Mark Maggiolo, Donnie Bailey, Charles Carpenter and Lowell Kline. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Rector, Richard Brady and T.J. Morgan.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Amissville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co., PO Box 147, Amissville, Va. 20106.
