Past Reflections Antiques opening in Warrenton

A new antique shop will open in Warrenton on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Kathy Shumate will operate Past Reflections Antiques adjacent to her Shumate Auctions on Falmouth Street.

The 700-square-foot shop will stock furniture, lamps, hand-made items, home dcor and Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.

"It was just a logical progression to have this next door," Ms. Shumate said. "A lot of auctioneers have a storefront and auction in the back. It's a hand-in-hand business, I think."

Ms. Shumate, 64, ran an antique shop under the same name in 2007, but had to close it because of her growing auctioneer business.

About three years ago, she moved all her auctions online, leaving her with more free time.

"Nobody has time anymore to spend somewhere for four hours," she said. "This way they can sit at home with a bottle of wine and dinner and bid. It's an evening experience for them."

Last year, she again focused on the antique shop.

"I had already decided that I was going to reopen Past Reflections, because I like buying and picking," Ms. Shumate said.

When Janet Metzger, former owner of The Empty Nest on Main Street, approached her about carrying Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan, Ms. Shumate jumped at the chance to make her shop unique.

Ms. Shumate recently attended a three-day course to learn different chalk paint techniques in New Orleans in preparation of selling the popular paint.

"Some people just don't have time to go out and find a little table or chair to paint," she said. "I want to be full service. I want them to be able to get their item, paint, brushes, sanding materials, everything they need to take a table home and make it beautiful."

The shop will also hold regular chalk painting workshops.

Ms. Shumate declined to say how much money she invested to open the shop.

Two employees from The Empty Nest will work in the new shop.
