Happy new year

First Day Hikes at Sky Meadows

Jan. 1, 5:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. | Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane

Celebrate New Year's at Sky Meadows with your own sunrise hike or ranger led hikes later in the day. While the American tradition of celebrating the New Year occurs at midnight on New Year's Eve, other cultures celebrate by enjoying the sunrise on New Year's Day. As part of the continuing American experience of sharing our vast cultural traditions, Sky Meadows will open their main gates (on Edmonds Lane) at 5:30 a.m. Enjoy your own hike from the Backcountry Trailhead to view the sunrise at one of the overlooks on the Piedmont Overlook Trail, South Ridge Trail or Ambassador Whitehouse Trail. Special hikes: Hike for Monarch Habitat at 10 a.m., “Auld Lang Syne” Hike at 1 p.m. Leashed pets are welcomed on all hikes. Parking fees waived on New Year's Day.

Not ready to let go of the glow of the holidays yet?

There is still time to see the lights at Maple Tree Farm (ends Dec. 30) and the Bull Run Festival of Lights (through January 8).

A Fauquier favorite, the holiday experience at Maple Tree Farm includes a walkthrough almost a half-mile long with a fairyland of twinkling lights and holiday music, a light show across the pond that is synchronized to music, a 24-foot Christmas tree, characters dressed up for photo opportunities, as well as fire pits, children’s crafts, puppet shows, sweet treats, hot drinks, and more.

Load your family in the car for one of Northern Virginia’s favorite holiday activities, the Bull Run Festival of Lights. The route is 2.5 miles, illuminated by a wide array of holiday light displays. Be socially distant and drive the festival route from the comfort of your car; turn off your headlights and just follow the magical glow.
