Rose Marie Smith passed away peacefully in her home on January 7, 2023, at 80 years of age.
Daughter of the late Henry and Margaret (Duranceau) LaHaie, Rose was born in 1942 in Saginaw, Michigan where she grew up and attended Saint Mary’s High School. Rose married Aubrey A. Smith on June 17, 1964. Together they raised two children in Broad Run Virginia.
Rose was a part-time mail carrier and substitute teacher. As a longstanding member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church, she was involved in many groups and volunteer activities. Rose’s service to the church included organizing the “Wise Women” to sort food for the Fauquier Food Distribution Coalition, and helping plan and prepare for funeral receptions. Rose and Aubrey opened their home by hosting kids through the Children’s Friendship Project for Northern Ireland and taking in children as a resource family for the Fauquier Foster Care program.
At home, Rose enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking, taking walks, and reading. Rose’s family is blessed to have all the beautiful things she has made over the years, from sequined Christmas tree skirts and knitted baby blankets, to tee-shirt quilts she made for each of her grandchildren. Most of all, Rose loved being surrounded by her family. She was at her happiest playing cards and games, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and vacationing at the beach in Kitty Hawk, NC. Rose had an energy and passion for life that touched us all and will live on in our memories.
Surviving Rose are her husband: Aubrey Smith; children: Elizabeth Healey (Joe) and Sinclair Smith (Tara); grandchildren: Meghan, Justin, Quinn, Liam, and Daniel; brother: Charles LaHaie; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers Bob, Ivan, and Dick, and sisters Jean and Cherry.
Visitation with the family will be Friday Jan 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Warrenton United Methodist Church, 341 Church St, Warrenton, VA 20186. Funeral service will be Saturday January 14th at 11:00 am followed by a reception, both at Warrenton United Methodist Church.
